The Greene County girls basketball team extended their season with a 56-51 victory over Southeast Valley Saturday, their third victory of the year. They play at Roland-Story in the second round of regional action tonight (Wednesday) at 7 pm. The Norsemen have defeated GC this year by scores of 76-11 and 85-19.
The Rams fell to a strong North Polk team 68-19 on Tuesday in Jefferson. The fifth ranked Comets improve to 16-5 before heading into post-season play.
N Polk 68 ~ Rams 19
Greene County was no match for the sixth-ranked team as North Polk jumped to a 22-5 first period lead, stretching their advantage to 42-10 by halftime. Down 59-16 going into the final frame, the Rams fell 68-19 in the final game of the regular season. It was the last game played in the middle school gym as the teams will occupy the new facilities on Highway 30 for the 2020-21 season.
Izzy Bravard led the Rams with seven points and Brianna Habben topped the team with seven rebounds.
North Polk hit 26 of 53 field goals, including 11 three-pointers. Greene County made six of 27 from the field with two treys.
Freshman Makayla Boatman fired 18 points for the Comets. North Polk kept the Rams off the boards as they gathered 34 rebounds to 13 for GC.
Rams 56 ~ SE Valley 51
Greene County pulled off an upset win over Southeast Valley in Gowrie Saturday, defeating the Jaguars 56-51 in a come-from-behind effort in the first round of regional tournament action. The Rams celebrated their third win of the season and will meet a Heart of Iowa Conference member, Roland-Story, on Wednesday.
SEV made two of 16 in the final quarter when the Rams were three of seven from the floor and 13 of 14 from the foul line. Greene County had 26 turnovers to 19 for SEV.
Greene County more than doubled its scoring average of 23 points per game by making 17 of 19 free throw attempts and hitting seven three-point shots.
Balanced scoring aided the Rams in posting a season high. Brianna Osterson had 14 points, Sadie Wilson 13, Izzy Bravard 12, and Brianna Habben 10.
